Get Back – I had the basic song for ‘Get Back’ as something I could sing and play on the piano but I couldn’t figure exactly how I wanted it to sound. It was the last thing finished for the record – about a week before the EP came out. My friend Morgan from Midnight Magic – who also plays in my live band – came by the studio and added the bass line and then it came together really, really quickly. I like how it’s kinda dreamy and sentimental on the verses and then the outro gets really funky and tuff in contrast. Well not really tuff, but tuff-er.
Negative Space – ‘Negative Space’ was a song I had floating around forever that didn’t fit Holy Ghost! for some reason. I went out to Los Angeles to work on it with my friends Vaughn Oliver and Ryland Blackington at the Chromeo compound and we added the bridge and then from there it was easy. I think that’s always the case for me – finding the little thing in the song that was missing, then it all comes together quickly.
Ryland’s Theme – This is a thing Ryland started for a film that never happened. He played it for me and I was like “oh man, this is the perfect intro to ‘Lost Design’!”
Lost Design – Probably my personal favorite on the record, I made it with my friend Kosuke in about 3 days at my house and at the XL studios and it really captures the spirit of what we wanted to get across without compromise. I think that’s true for the EP – when you get to make something fast like this you don’t overthink or compromise what you wanted to get across at that moment in time.
